Old Decommissioned Onsite Fabian - Updated 27 Jun 2024

note

This page discusses the old onsite Fabian service decommissioned in 2023 and NOT the current Fabian service at https://ondemand.fab.lse.ac.uk/.

On the old Fabian decommissioned in 2023 there were two types of data that belonged to users.

  • Project Data stored under the /projects folder

  • User Data stored in their home directories under the /users folder

Project Data

The owners of all projects have been contacted, and most have replied. We have transferred projects to the new Fabian where requested and deleted data as agreed with the project owners.

A few project owners have yet to reply; we will contact them again and other members of their projects before archiving or deleting their projects.

User Data

For users with smaller home directories (under 500GB), we have compressed their home directories and stored them in cost-effective cloud storage.

For users with larger home directories (over 500GB), we have contacted them to ensure they have all they need on the new Fabian service. To reduce costs, we have chosen not to automatically archive their data.

FAQs

How long will my data be kept? The data will be archived for three years. At the end of three years, the data will be securely destroyed.

How can I access my data? Users can request access to their data by submitting a service desk ticket to tech-support@lse.ac.uk.

What format is my data stored in? The archives are in 7-zip format.

I don't need my data, what should I do? Please contact us at tech-support@lse.ac.uk, and we will destroy your archived data.

Why not just delete everything? Some researchers may not have been aware that Fabian was decommissioned; they could be on sabbatical or researching away from the LSE. Users may find they need something from the old Fabian that they did not anticipate at the time of decommissioning.
